Translation from Dutch per Google Translate:
American guitarist, singer and songwriter Laurie Morvan was born and grew up in Illinois. Due to the fault of her alcohol-dependent father, Laurie did not grow up in the best living conditions in her first years of life. Fortunately her mother was a hard working woman who had everything for her daughter. After the divorce of her parents, her mother remarried and Laurie knew a lot of warmth with her stepfather. In that new environment Laurie also got to know all kinds of music because there was always music at home. She studied electrical engineering at the University of Illinois and also played in the school's volleyball team, which earned herself a scholarship for her last two years at the university. Morvan is also a licensed pilot and worked for a number of years in the aerospace industry in Southern California before starting her blues career. The first band of Laurie Morvan played Top 40 songs and covers and had a lot of gigs in the casinos of Nevada and hotels and clubs in California. When she first saw Stevie Ray Vaughan at work, she was so impressed that she began to delve into the blues music. The more she was busy with blues and blues rock, the more passion she got for this music. She started writing her own songs and wanted to record and release her songs. Unfortunately the money was missing and that meant that Laurie had to earn money in a different way. She went back to study and obtained her masters degree in mathematics in Applied Mathematics and gave mathematics lessons in colleges to raise money to go to the studio. In 1997 she released her first album 'Out Of The Woods' with her band Backroad Shack, which included only songs that Laurie had written. In 2004, Laurie changed the group name to the Laurie Morvan Band and the release of 'Find My Way Home' from 2004 and 'Cures What Ails Ya' from 2007 received extra media attention in that name, via some stories in the magazine and airplay on the syndicated radio program House of Blues Radio Hour. In 2008 the Laurie Morvan Band reached the final of the International Blues Challenge in Memphis, TN and the connections made there followed a tour through the Midwest of the USA. In 2009 her fourth album 'Fire It Up!' Was released, with which she won the Blues Foundation Award for Best Self-Produced CD in 2010. Two years later, in 2011 'Breathe Deep' appeared and now seven years later there is 'Gravity' that appeared under the name Laurie Morvan. The album contains twelve songs, which were written by Laurie without exception.

The album 'Gravity' opens with the infectious swinging rocker 'My Moderation', in which Laurie sings that we have to amuse ourselves and enjoy every moment, because life is short. The rhythm section with drummer Tony Braunagel and bass player Bob Glaub provide the driving, swinging groove. Keyboard virtuoso Mike Finnigan is explicitly present with swirling keyboard work on his B3 Hammond and also frontwoman Laurie Morvan shows with a good strings solo on her Stratocaster that she has good fingers. Laurie has a nice full voice and sings the song with a lot of conviction. With his Hammond sounds, Mike Finnigan is again very decisive for the sound in the edgy 'Twice The Trouble', yet it is Laurie who draws all the attention with a scorching guitar solo. The voice of Laurie is very reminiscent of the voice of Christine McVie. 'Twice The Trouble' is a very strong and catchy song, sung by an excellent singer. The blues ballad 'Stay With Me' is a beautiful ballad carried by the warm Hammond sounds of Mike Finnigan. Jim Pugh creates the instrumental finish with very clever and subtle piano work and Laurie Morvan confirms once again that she is a very good guitarist with razor-sharp and soulful strings solo on her Fender Strat. With the Texas blues shuffle 'Money Talks', Laurie sets off again on the swinging road. The energetic vocals of Laurie blend beautifully with the voices of the backing singers Lisa Morvan, Maxayn Lewis, Kudisan Kai and Leslie Smith. The rhythm section, with the seasoned musicians Bob Glaub and Tony Braunagel create the swinging groove, on which Hammond player Mike Finnigan, pianist Barry Goldberg and guitarist Laurie Morvan open all their registers and display their instrumental virtuosity. The guitar-driven Southern funky 'The Extra Mile' is a handsome tribute to blues rock legend Freddie King. In the slower title track 'Gravity' Laurie expresses her love for her partner Lisa, who takes care of the backing vocals here. 'Gravity' is a mix of pop, jazz and rock and is sung with a lot of feeling by Laurie.

With a razor-sharp guitar intro by Morvan, 'Dance In The Rain' is set in motion. The song, in which Stevie Ray Vaughan influences can clearly be heard, has a contagious groove. Jim Pugh is irresistible with swirling keyboards on the Hammond B3. Wonderful number. That Laurie Morvan is musically versatile shows them in the greasy swampy 'Gotta Dig Deep'. The song has a tight and compelling groove and a very contagious chorus. In the haunting gospel ball tray 'The Man Who Left Me', Laurie shows her soul and heart deeply. Let us first make it clear that this song is about her father, who left Laurie and her mother at the time the singer was five years old. In this sad and catchy gospel song, the masterly percussion creates a creepy atmosphere. Laurie and her backing vocals Maxayn Lewis, Kudisan Kay, Leslie Smith and Rickie Nelson provide a catchy and outstanding vocal performance. Also in her string work during 'The Man Who Left Me', Laurie succeeds in making the same haunting emotion as she does with her voice. The rhythm goes back slightly with the warm Hammond sounds of Jim Pugh during 'Shake Your Tailfeathers', in which the singer says how you can turn problems away. This attractive song is a mix of blues, soul and funk, and Laurie's warm voice also reminds me of Christine McVie unconsciously. By the way, this is a song that could perfectly fit on a Christine album. The melodious soulful string solo fits like this in this handsome song. With 'I Want Answers', Laurie takes us to the Delta Blues. The gritty guitar and keyboard work of Jim Pugh on piano and Mike Finnigan on Hammond B3 provide an excellent instrumental sound game. The album ends with 'Too Dumb To Quit', which is about a bad relationship that took too long. Again, the spicy interplay between Jim Pugh's Hammond and Laurie's guitar is the absolute tastemaker. Laurie again shows her class as a guitarist with distorted Wah Wah riffs, but also through her work with the bottleneck. 'Gravity' by Laurie Morvan is an excellent album, which will often end up in my CD player. Hopefully this lady will also promote the album live in Europe, because Laurie Morvan would be a great asset at any festival or club. (8.5 / 10)

Original In Dutch:
In 2009 verscheen haar vierde album 'Fire It Up!', waarmee ze in 2010 de Blues Foundation Award for Best Self-Produced CD won. In de beklijvende gospelballade 'The Man Who Left Me' laat Laurie diep in haar ziel en hart kijken. (8,5/10)
